The
above mentioned four thematic maps are;
- 1:300,000 scale Geochemical Atlas (Vol. Env 1 Sheet 20: Rakwana - Tangalla),
- 1:250,000
scale Four-quadrant Provisional geological map covering the entire country,
- 1:50,000
scale Three Quaternary Geological maps, namely, Kalutara,
Balapitiya-Ambalangoda and Matara and
- (1:150,000)
scale Mineral Map of the Central Province
of the four maps, the GSMB Geochemical
Atlas covers southern part of the
Southern Province and NW and NE parts of
the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces respectively, depicts the distribution of
chemical elements of the area, enabling professionals to determine, inter alia,
the influence on soil fertility, forestry, water quality and human-animal
health. Considering the area it covers, this map, will undoubtedly be a much
sought-after document for development plans of Hambantota and its vicinity. The
GSMB plans to generate a series of Geochemical Maps at the same scale by
continuing this geochemical mapping programme island-wide and compile the
National Geochemical Atlas that could contain nearly twenty maps.
This Atlas will be an extremely valuable
multi-user data base and consequently a powerful tool for scientists and
national-level planners from different sectors such as land-use, urban
planning, environmental management, monitoring industrial pollution and
mitigating endemic health problems, in mineral exploration and academic studies
of the upper continental crust.
The four-quadrant Provisional Geology
map provides a synoptic view of the country’s rock types, their associations,
geological structure, drainage patterns, etc. and therefore will be an
essential map for mega development projects. At its scale of 1:250,000, in
addition to its manifold geologic value, it would also be an ideal start-up map
to demarcate new electoral boundaries.
The three Quaternary Geological maps
namely, Kalutara, Balapitiya-Ambalangoda and Matara, at 1:50,000 scale, contain
valuable geological information useful for various disciplines including
mineral and ground water exploration, civil and geotechnical engineering, etc.
The Central Province Mineral Resources
map could no doubt be used to augment its development portfolio by adding
mineral based industries. The GSMB plans to prepare similar maps covering all
Provinces.
The Maps Launching Ceremony was
held at BMICH on 16th October 2017
in line with the Sri Lanka Next
Program organized by the Ministry of Environment and Mahaweli
Development and his Excellency Maithripala Sirisena,
President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka graced this
occasion as its Honoured Chief Guest.

Geochemical
Atlas (Vol. Env 1 Sheet 20: Rakwana- Tangalla) is the first National
Geochemical Atlas published in Sri Lanka, which was based on the island-wide
geochemical mapping programme conducted by the GSMB.
In
addition GSMB has recently published 03 Quaternary Geochemical maps
(Kalutara,Balapitiya-Ambalangoda and Matara), Provincial Mineral Map(Central
province)and 04 Quadrant geological maps(1:250,000) covering the entire
country.
